tryon farmthe settlementsThe settlements at Tryon Farm are formed by the characteristics of the different parts of the landscape. Each settlement is shaped by the location of houses and lofts within the landscape, the views from the houses, and the desire to encapsulate each settlement within its nartural surroundings. Because the former dairy farm has such visual differences in character, from farmstead to woods to meadows surrounded by woods and dunes with ancient beech trees, the settlements are quite distinct from each other. The Farmstead settlement is adjacent to the old farmhouse, barns and sheds that made up the original dairy farm. It is surrounded by prairie, wetland and farm fields. Each house is located around or near shared courtyards of Wisconsin red granite gravel. The Woods settlement is secluded within a forested area of the farm and the homes of the Pond settlement recede into the landscape around a pond that frogs, minnows and herons also call home.
